A transformative journey toward sustainable urban development

WE NEED TREES IN DRY CITIES

In the drylands, where cities are facing some of the harshest impacts of climate change, nearly 2 billion people are feeling the heat.

Extreme temperatures, prolonged droughts, and sudden flash floods are becoming more frequent and severe.

Trees in dry cities are a cost-effective solution to deliver local and global goals:

They can lower temperatures by up to 8 degrees Celsius, providing a much-needed relief from the scorching heat. In drylands, trees suitable to local ecosystems, cultures and dry climates can slow and even reverse desertification and soil erosion, and their benefits extend to our daily lives. Green spaces improve our mental health, provide recreational opportunities, and unlock substantial savings in public health expenditures.

Ensuring trees are part of the plan and solution requires effective policy, planning, management and collaboration across sectors and levels of government.

CITIES need support to plan, manage and invest in urban trees and nature over the long term.

NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS need national policy to systemically drive, and support aligned action at the subnational level to implement this nature-based solution.

WHOLE OF SOCIETY: engaging private sector, civil society, experts, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations can deliver results at scale.

Together, we can turn our dry cities into vibrant, sustainable places for generations to come.

The Coalition is open to all.
