Monitoring and assessment
International reporting on forests and sustainable forest management serves to monitor and assess the condition and utilization of the world's forests, ensuring they are managed in the ways that meet current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
The forest sector pioneered the development and application of indicators to monitor progress against sustainability. In the 1990s, first indicator sets had already been developed for every world’s region. By 2000, 171 countries were participating in 11 regional processes to develop C&I for SFM. Today there are only six C&I for SFM processes, proactively coordinating and supporting their member countries.

The process involves collecting and sharing comprehensive data on forest condition, including biodiversity, and the impacts of human activities. By doing so, it promotes transparency, informs policymaking, and fosters global cooperation among countries to address deforestation, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
The Joint UNEC/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, working together with FAO and FOREST EUROPE, collects data on the global and regional indicators related to forests and forest management. The collected data is publicly shared in the interactive format via several thematic platforms.
