Solutions involve adaptive management, stakeholder collaboration, and innovative technologies. In addition, technological advancements, such as remote sensing and GIS, are revolutionizing forest information management and call for further resources and training.

Criteria and Indicators schemes need to be tailored to address policy and societal needs, local conditions while being sensitive to challenges and opportunities.

The Joint Section also supports countries in developing national criteria and indicators and reporting for sustainable forest management (SFM). The capacity building project "Accountability Systems for Sustainable Forest Management" helped to develop national C&I sets in five countries (Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan).

The objective of the project was to strengthen the national capacities of project countries to develop national criteria, indicators and reporting for sustainable forest management. By this, the project aimed to enable the countries to actively participate in international processes related to forests, fulfil related international reporting obligations on forests and forestry and contribute to the sustainable development of the forest sector towards a green economy.

The implementation of the project benefitted from the pilot application of the Guidelines, likewise relevant for other countries.
